Mission
The mission of Project Self-Sufficiency (PS-S) is to assist low-income, single parents in their efforts to build and maintain strong, healthy families; achieve economic independence; and become free from community and government assistance.
History
PS-S evolved from the efforts of a countywide task force that met in 1985 to better coordinate and expand services for low-income, single parent families while encouraging the families toward greater self-sufficiency.
Task force members pledged resources, including staff time and housing assistance for families, and the new project began in October, 1986, with the enrollment of 65 families. Current program capacity is 150 families.Since that time numerous program elements have been added, including the “Cars for Families” donation and repair programs, the scholarship fund, the emergency fund, the Boundless Children’s Fund, self-esteem and other classes, holiday programs, a career clothing closet for single parents, and “Cool Kids” back-to-school clothes for children.
